Chris Brubeck’s stirring homage to the flag raisers at Iwo Jima, Quiet Heroes, is the emotional centerpiece of this tribute to those who defend our country. Noted actor Wilford Brimley will provide the narrative which describes the events surrounding that memorable event and photograph.

Program

Robert Lowden: Armed Forces Salute
Jeffrey Smith: Thunderbolt March
Norman Dello Joio: “Mission in the Sky” from Airpower
Richard Rodgers: Suite from Victory at Sea
Christopher Brubeck: Quiet Heroes
Encore: arr. Carmen Dragon: America the Beautiful

Based upon the bestselling book by James Bradley Flags of our Fathers, which was subsequently made into a film directed by Clint Eastwood, Brubeck’s work follows the lives of the six flag-raisers through their early lives of innocence, military training, fierce combat and afterward, when they were sent on tours to raise money for war bonds. It is a story of dedication and manipulation, bravery and burnout, lived out in lives both heroic and sad. Yet at the story’s core is the fierce devotion of all their comrades that these soldiers exemplified both on and off the battlefront.

Brubeck’s enlivening music melds with the riveting story line to touch the hearts of all who hear, whether young or old. Join with the Bartlesville Symphony to honor our local veterans and current servicemen, and take part in a concert and patriotic experience that is sure to move everyone in attendance.
