The 2017 Myrna Hershberger Young Artists Competition has returned!
The Bartlesville Symphony Orchestra will be hosting the Myrna Hershberger Young Artists Competition January 15, 2017. The purpose of this competition is to provide promising young musicians of Bartlesville region the opportunity for exposure within the community through performance as soloists with the Bartlesville Symphony as part of the regular season concert on March 25, 2017.
Any instrumentalist or vocalist in grades 10 through 12 and who is: 1) a resident of the school districts in Bartlesville, Dewey, Pawhuska, Nowata, Copan, South Coffeyville and Caney Valley or 2) a student of a private teacher of Bartlesville or 3) a student of a regular Bartlesville Symphony Orchestra member. Current orchestra members and their relatives are also eligible, provided they satisfy the school grade requirement. The winner of the previous year’s competition is not eligible for the current competition in the same instrument but they can compete with a different instrument. All participants must be at least 15 years old at the time of the competition.
he students may perform any piece/aria/movement/concerto for which orchestra accompaniment exists and is available. The piece played in the competition must be the piece intended for possible performance with the Symphony. Each entrant must supply at least one copy of their music for the judges (no photo copies). All contestants must perform from memory. Selections are subject to the Young Artists Committee’s approval.
A instrumentalist winner and vocalist winner will be selected by a panel of judges. Each competition will have one winner with the judges’ option of having one alternate and one honorable mention. The winners will perform with the orchestra and receive a monetary award. The judges reserve the right to not award prizes if the level of performance does not meet the high standards needed for playing with an orchestra. Only the first place winners will perform and receive a cash award along with 4 comp tickets. Those receiving alternate and honorable mention will receive 2 comp tickets.
