This year’s competition will once again have two categories – an instrumental category and a vocal category. The winners will get to perform with BSO at our March 25th season concert.
Purpose of Competition: To provide promising young musicians the opportunity for exposure within the community through performance as soloists with the Bartlesville Symphony as part of the March 25, 2016 (Saturday) regular season evening concert.
Date and Place of Competition: January 15th – Oklahoma Wesleyan University, Lyon Hall
Who May Compete: Any instrumentalist, pianist or vocalist in grades 10 through 12 who is: 1) a resident of the school districts in Bartlesville, Dewey, Pawhuska, Nowata, Copan, South Coffeyville and Caney Valley or 2) a private student of a Bartlesville/Dewey teacher or 3) a student of a regular Bartlesville Symphony Orchestra member. Current orchestra members and their relatives are also eligible, provided they satisfy the school grade requirement.
All participants must be at least 15 years old at the time of the competition. Music to Be Performed: Any piece/aria/movement/concerto for which orchestra accompaniment exists and is available may be used (check with Luck’s music http://www.lucksmusic.com or the music director.) The piece played in the competition must be the piece intended for possible performance with the Symphony. Each entrant must supply at least one copy of their music for the judges (no photo copies). All contestants must perform from memory. Selections are subject to the Young Artists Committee’s approval. It is the entrants’ teacher’s responsibility to prepare the entrant for the intricacies of working with an orchestra for a major Saturday evening concert.
Who May Win: A winner will be selected by a panel of judges for each category. Each Young Artists Competition category will have one winner with the judges’ option of having one alternate and one honorable mention. The winner will perform with the orchestra and receive a monetary award of $500 each. The judges reserve the right to not award prizes if the level of performance does not meet the high standards needed for playing with an orchestra. Only the first place winners will perform and receive a cash award along with 4 comp tickets. Those receiving alternate and honorable mention will receive 2 comp tickets.
The winners will be asked to make appearances at other designated times and venues such as schools for educational outreach. The Young Artists Committee reserves the right to cancel any of the Young Artists’ performance any time in the course of the competition or performance with the symphony.
